Fusion: Jazz-Rock in the '70s

Electric guitar has been in jazz since the days of bebop, though the '70s was when distortion pedals appeared. Miles Davis' fusion groups of this decade could challenge any psychedelic rockers when it came to trippy timbres—as the Jack Johnson outtake “Willie Nelson (Insert 2)” proves—and the genre's flexibility also pushed singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell to new heights.
