When D.C. post-hardcore quartet Fugazi formed in 1987, three of its members had already started movements. With Minor Threat, Ian MacKaye coined the phrase “straight edge”, and Guy Picciotto and Brendan Canty had arguably founded emo with Rites Of Spring. Over six LPs, Fugazi developed a broad sonic palette that incorporated post-punk, funk, reggae and aggressive guitars. The band enjoyed worldwide success touring the globe, fiercely maintaining their independence, and eventually building a legacy that rivalled their own prior achievements. Fugazi announced their “indefinite hiatus” in 2003.
