Etta James: Next Steps

Dubbed “The Matriarch of R&B”, Etta James was a formidable presence in other genres too. She breaks into Little Richard–worthy whoops on 1956's handclapping romp “Tough Lover”, only to rival Billie Holiday with her earthy 2001 version of the soul-searching jazz standard “In My Solitude”. She brings her signature oomph to the barnstorming “842-3089 (Call My Name)” and a gender-swapped reworking of Otis Redding's “Mr. Pitiful” retititled "Miss Pitiful".
