Diafrix Essentials

It's a long way from Africa to Melbourne, but that's the trip Momo (from Comoros Islands) and Azmarino (from Eritrea) have taken. The duo met in 2001 as school kids attending an Aussie hip-hop clinic and were brought together by a shared love of old-school beats and vintage reggae. Diafrix's 2006 debut, In Tha Place, was filled with dancehall-inspired swagger, soulful samples, and whip-smart lyrics detailing their experiences as black men in a white society. By their third full-length, 2012's radio-friendly Pocket Full of Dreams, the band was still firing off socially conscious rhymes, but they had also developed into one of Australia's most broadly appealing hip-hop groups—a fact underscored by tour dates with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
