Dehd Essentials

In the late 2010s, Dehd emerged as Chicago’s next great indie-rock hope. Though the trio may wield an endearingly brittle aesthetic—pulling in nostalgic nods to surf music, the sparkling post-punk of early Cure, and the aching sincerity of contemporaries like Big Thief—they project an outsized presence, thanks to the captivating, mercurial voice of singer/bassist Emily Kempf. On the twangy “Lucky,” she delivers a relationship requiem with equal doses of hardened resolve and tear-stained devastation, but “Loner” showcases a more playful side, as Kempf answers the song’s galloping rhythm with an infectious, hiccuping vocal hook.
