Client Liaison's Pool Party

According to Client Liaison, the dance-pop duo’s dream pool party takes place in the late ’90s or early 2000s. In Ibiza. Or maybe a forest. “There’s a Buddha statue too. And wind chimes,” vocalist Monte Morgan tells Apple Music. “There’s an element of relaxation, but when you see the pool, you wanna party.” While most of us will have to settle for pool parties in regular old beach clubs and backyards, this playlist, hand-picked by Morgan and keyboardist/producer Harvey Miller, might be just the trick for adding that laidback, magical, turn-of-the-century vibe. “It’s fast but chill. It’s daytime and nighttime—at the same time,” Morgan says. There’s plenty of downtempo house and throwback electro, but that’s not all there is to it. “A bit of trash is always really good,” Morgan says. “You pepper some trash in with the really sophisticated stuff and it just picks everyone up again.” “It’s all about the highbrow and the lowbrow coming together,” adds Miller. “You’ve gotta have the Moët in one hand and the fast-food cheeseburger in the other.” Below, the pair talk about some of their favourite tracks in the playlist. Mylo, “In My Arms” Miller: “There's not much that says partying and dance music more than Mylo. This is a total poolside party jam. Like all good dance music, it has the ability to have one thing that it repeats, and it doesn't sound like it's being repeated because they just present it so many different ways.” Morgan: “It gives you that feeling. There’s nowhere else you need to be right now. You can stay exactly where you are because this is the place to be. You can spend all afternoon in the sun, baking.” Armand Van Helden, “Hear My Name” Miller: “It’s got that late-'90s, early-2000s house vibe. And this was a time where all the DJs were going back and remixing and resampling all the soul and funk, and really vocal house was so strong. We really love that era. This sound has that sort of timeless Ibiza beach club sound. It’s a pretty special thing.” Morcheeba, “The Sea” Morgan: “You’d have those songs that would hit summer. You’d play it across the whole summer. You’d go down to the beach with your friends, and you’d keep playing that song. And I love the artwork with the Buddha, that red lounge.” Flight Facilities, “Foreign Language” Miller: “Flight Facilities are good friends of ours and they really embrace that early-2000s vocal house. We couldn’t make this playlist without them in there.” Morgan: “People say their biggest influence is the ’70s, but I think it’s the early noughties. That retro-upon-retro thing.”
