Charlie Byrd Essentials

Charlie Byrd Essentials

After transferring the delicacy and harmonic sophistication of his classical training into the jazz realm, guitarist Charlie Byrd introduced bossa nova to the U.S., alongside saxophonist Stan Getz. Their hit 1962 album Jazz Samba infused bossa standards like "Desafinado" with wise improvisatory spirit. Byrd's quiet, subtle and nuance-filled playing is especially pleasing in "Corcovado" and "Dindi"; his acoustic guitar contrasts nicely with Herb Ellis' electric instrument on "Jazz 'N' Samba", and he displays a fierier side with vibraphonist Cal Tjader's group on "Tambu (Tombo in 7/4)".
