Cecil Taylor once said, "In jazz, each musician is his own academy". The unflinchingly singular pianist/composer/bandleader has certainly been a school unto himself since entering the New York scene in the late ‘50s, pioneering his own fiery but cerebral brand of free jazz. He's also known for solo concerts that confound audiences with their sustained creativity and sheer physical endurance.
