Carlos Vives Essentials

Formerly a telenovela fixture, Carlos Vives traded acting for retooling sounds from home: Colombian folk flavoured with a touch of lively pop. In the ‘90s he fiercely resurrected champeta in the accordion-driven “Pa' Mayté", but pivoted to vallenato with his stunning rendition of “La Gota Fría", showcasing his impressive gift for fusing traditional genres with contemporary styles. In the decades since, he continues to mix together sounds, like in the reggaetón-laced “La Bicicleta", where hard-hitting dembow, pop and cumbia meet.
