It's fair to say that the British have perfected the art of the girl band, successfully producing high-grade acts like the Spice Girls, Sugababes and Girls Aloud. But let's not discount their female solo artists, with Lily Allen redefining pop with her sardonic wit and biting humour, and Ellie Goulding, Jessie J and Rita Ora conquering both sides of the Atlantic.
