Bikini Kill Essentials

Updating the primordial shriek of ‘70s lady-punk pioneers like Poly Styrene for '90s-era mosh pits and third-wave feminism, Bikini Kill were bellwethers of the unapologetically abrasive and outspoken post-hardcore subculture known as riot grrrl. Decades before #MeToo catalysed into a social movement, singer Kathleen Hanna was sharing graphic stories of incest (“Daddy's Li'l Girl”) and domineering boyfriends (“Candy”) as a means for survivors to translate shame into rage. But from anger comes empowerment, and with “Rebel Girl”, Hanna delivered an ecstatic, fist-pumping anthem for the ages that anticipated her tilt toward pop in Le Tigre.
