JAY Z co-founded Roc-A-Fella to release his lyrically dense, streetwise solo work. But he soon built the label into an army of like-minded hardcore rappers, such as Brooklyn protégé Memphis Bleek and Philly lieutenant Beanie Sigel. The Roc's soulful signature sound was crafted by in-house producers like Just Blaze and Kanye West, the latter of whom became one of the label's biggest artists.
