After Guinea threw off the colonial yoke in 1958, its first president, Sékou Touré, nationalised the country's dance bands and challenged them to apply modern instrumentation to traditional music while recording for the government-controlled Syliphone label. While this doesn't sound like a formula for a burst of dazzling creativity, it was: bands like Bembeya Jazz reinvented African music.
