Ghana was a powerhouse of West African music from the ‘50s through the ‘70s. Highlife dance bands such as the Tempos (led by E.T. Mensah) flourished, as did guitar-dominated highlife by African Brothers International. The nation produced amazing funk and rock bands, and in the ‘80s it reinvented itself musically yet again, as groups like Afroganic invented the hip-hop/highlife synthesis hiplife.
