When disco slunk back underground in the early-‘80s, DJs like Larry Levan kept it alive at New York's Paradise Garage, while Blaze and Ten City fused funk, R&B and gospel with modern electronic rhythms. In Chicago, this transitional sound turned into house music, but in New York and New Jersey, it became known as garage, in homage to Levan's club. Throughout the '90s, it was the dance music of choice for clubbers who wanted their beats funkier and their divas more soulful, with Masters at Work and Ultra Naté pioneering the spine-tingling mix of rough and smooth.
