By the middle of the '80s, smart record companies were turning to the left of the dial, where the low-powered college radio stations were breaking new bands all by themselves. Smart DJs plugged into the burgeoning indie underground were the first to play future stars like R.E.M., whose debut single "Radio Free Europe" felt like the calling card of the entire scene.
