As the way-out sound of swing grew ever more popular during the ‘30s, so grew the ensembles that performed it. Soon enough, the big band style was sweeping the world. Focusing less on improvisation and more on meticulous arrangements that brought out the explosive dynamism of the music, big bands provided a cathartic escape for soldiers and civilians alike as World War II set in during the ‘40s.
