A large percentage of Australia is hot and flat, and you can see for miles and miles in any direction. It's the perfect setting for a country song, and in the '70s that meant weathered guys like Slim Dusty and Smokey Dawson wearing broad-brimmed hats and singing in laconic voices about the farm and the bush and the characters who inhabited them.
