Ben Kweller has humbly ruled the indie singer/songwriter scene of the 21st century without ever following a direct path. The year 2002 saw the hyped Texas rocker slip into a cosy solo career with a debut that squeezed together noisy, emotionally raw stompers (“Wasted & Ready”) with buoyant power pop (“Falling”). As he settled into his 20s, Kweller took full control of his sound, playing all the instruments on his 2006 self-titled album, highlighted by earnest pop ballads like “Sundress”. Soon enough, he’d dig into his Southern roots with some pedal-steel-laced country on “Wantin’ Her Again”, all sealed with his signature heart-on-sleeve charm.
