When you've just spent 25 years driving a global rock juggernaut called Midnight Oil, back must be a mighty tempting way to slide. Following that band's 2002 retirement, drummer Rob Hirst clearly relished throwing his full weight behind esteemed Delta blues aficionado Dom Turner, long regarded among Australia's finest blues singer/songwriters. Riding the duo's lean, dirty grooves on alternate gigs are two of the country's most fiery harmonica maestros, Brod Smith and Ian Collard. After 25 years of freewheeling from Piedmont fingerpickers to exotic eastern influences, the combustible combo released the 13th Backsliders album, Dark Side, in 2014.
