At Home With Lady A: The Playlist

“We're all having to pivot this year,” Lady A’s Dave Haywood says about adapting to the circumstances of the pandemic after cancelling their 2020 tour. “We've done a couple of virtual shows, but just playing music together in a room—I get chill bumps. I can't imagine that first time we're able to get back onstage, man. It's going to be so electric.” In the meantime, the country trio of Haywood, Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley are keeping themselves busy by writing new music without any agenda in mind. Fresh off the release of Ocean's deluxe edition, Lady A share an exclusive Apple Music playlist of songs that find just the right balance between classic holiday hits and modern favourites. Check out the stories behind some of the trio’s picks below. Donny Hathaway, “Jealous Guy (Live)” Charles: “I mean, it's almost sacrilege. You don't cover anything. And this was, of course, John Lennon's song, which is really difficult to cover. And I'm telling you, man, he turned it into a whole different song. I dare say, I think it's better than the original version.” Niall Horan, “Bend the Rules” Hillary: “Heartbreak Weather is a repeat album in our house. It's just one that I'll play with my daughters. We'll be cooking dinner. Every track just feels good. I have been trying through quarantine to get on the piano a little bit more, and I found a YouTube tutorial of 'San Francisco', his song on the record. It's such, just the melody and that piano hook—it’s one of my favourites.” Caitlyn Smith, “Long Time Coming” Hillary: “I know Charles specifically has been such a huge mega fan of Caitlyn for so many years. I saw her perform—just by herself and an acoustic guitar—her single, and it blew me away. I'm so excited for what she's bringing, a youthfulness to the genre in a really beautiful way—and it's just a great song.”
