Arabesk Essentials

Arabesk Essentials

Arabic music has been part of Turkey's cultural identity for centuries, and Arabesk is modern expression of that heritage. Although banned in 1948, the sound—in which powerful vocalists lavishly ornament lyrics concerning the exquisite anguish of unrequited love—became Turkey's most popular style in the '60s. Some artists add funky Bollywood disco and other upbeat mix-ins to a wall of strings.
