Supreme vocal confidence has made Aaradhna an intoxicating addition to New Zealand's music scene. She held court over velvety R&B backdrops on her 2006 debut, I Love You, then got a bit grittier with Sweet Soul Music, her homage to the American masters. Collaborations with Adeaze, P-Money and Talib Kweli lent newfound layers to the smouldering grooves of 2012's Treble & Reverb. Yet 2016's Brown Girl proved to be her true breakthrough—the title track airs her personal experiences with racism, while “Empty Hall” is vintage soul that owes as much to Curtis Mayfield as it does to Amy Winehouse.
