Sometimes, one song is all it takes to launch an entire movement. With 2005’s “Rej”, Karlsruhe natives Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, then just a few years into their recording career as me, paired the repetition of German techno with the moody expansiveness of Detroit and Chicago, initiating a new wave of deep, emotive house. Alongside fellow Berlin transplant Dixon, with whom they cofounded the Innervisions label in 2005, me would skillfully sneak a wide array of influences into peak-time club music: the minimalism of composer Steve Reich, the kosmische sprawl of musician Manuel Göttsching, and the polyrhythms of African music. me are as celebrated for their remixes as they are for their productions. While many edits are for their own club use only, their 2012 album Live showcased their interpretive skills across custom versions of cuts by Underworld, UNKLE, and even Roy Ayers.
