Brothers Matthew and Patrick Flegel formed Women in Calgary, Alberta toward the end of the 2000s with childhood friends Michael Wallace and Christopher Reimer. They got their first notable boost when some of the group toured with songwriter Chad VanGaalen, who would later become their labelmate on Flemish Eye Records. VanGaalen would also produce their self-titled 2008 debut, which garnered a good deal of indie acclaim for its Zombies-esque, raw-but-melodic approach. The foursome subsequently embarked on a nationwide tour, sharing stages with VanGaalen, as well as contemporaries such as Crystal Stilts. ~ Kenneth Herzog
