About Negativland

Negativland are as much a radical arts organization as a band. They coined the term "culture jamming" to describe their subversive media manipulation, and assemble much of their semi-musical collages out of found and re-appropriated material, providing surreal commentary on topics ranging from religion to celebrity culture to intellectual property. They've received more widespread attention for their hoaxes and media stunts, most notably the uproar caused when the band issued a press release falsely linking a song from Escape from Noise (1987) to a real-life murder, or the lengthy debacle following the infamous U2 single (1991). Tireless advocates for copyright reform, they worked to develop the Creative Commons Sampling License in 2004. By the 2010s, the group's techniques had become commonplace, making their work as prescient as ever. True False (2019) and The World Will Decide (2020) have continued their exploration of themes related to media and technology.
