Pianist Matei Varga is an heir to the grand Romanian piano tradition but also plays the music of many other nationalities. Varga made his recording debut in 2003 on an audiophile audio/video DVD. He has appeared widely as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician. After joining frequent duet partner Laura Buruiana on a 2014 recording of Brahms' two cello sonatas, he released the recital First Day with cellist Laura Metcalf in 2016, releasing two more albums as a soloist, Early Departures (2018) and The Year That Never Was (2022).
