For an artist with a background in musical theatre and opera, Canadian (and Acadian) singer/songwriter Marie-Jo Thério is a remarkably understated performer. But if her alternately rustic and atmospheric balladry shuns big-stage spectacle, it retains a theatrical flair for captivating storytelling, rich characterisation and immersive scenery. On the gorgeously ethereal, accordion-pumped title track and the Springsteen-worthy passion play “Café Robinson”, you can practically see the sunset dissolving in the distance. The pervading melancholy is undercut by irreverent skits, but these only enrich the other songs’ mise-en-scène.
