Kara-Lis Coverdale is a Canadian composer, musician, and arranger based in Montreal. While she has a background in traditional modes of composition, and has worked extensively as an organist and music director at several churches, she also creates experimental electronic and electro-acoustic music, often looping vocal samples into immersive, transformative patterns. Coverdale was born in Hamilton, Ontario and began playing piano and composing music as a child. She attended music school at the University of Western Ontario, where she was introduced to electro-acoustic music, and began experimenting with digital processes. In 2010 she moved to Montreal, where she became an organist at St. John's Estonian Lutheran Church. Her debut release, a solo piano EP titled Triptych I, appeared at the end of 2012. She played keyboards on Tim Hecker's 2013 album Virgins, and began performing live with him. She also acted in and composed music for plays written by her friend Kara Crabb. In 2014, Constellation Tatsu released Coverdale's cassette A 480, a series of compositions created from digitally manipulated, looped voices. This was followed in 2015 by Aftertouches (a cassette issued by Sacred Phrases), which included pieces from Conversion Music, her 2013 composition for wind controller. Coverdale also collaborated with experimental artist LXV (David Sutton) on an LP titled Sirens, issued by Mexican label Umor Rex, and contributed piano arrangements to Lee Bannon's Pattern of Excel. In 2016, Coverdale appeared on Tim Hecker's Love Streams and How to Dress Well's Care. Coverdale's one-sided LP Grafts was released by Boomkat Editions in 2017. ~ Paul Simpson
