About Eyuphuro

This Mozambique group comprises Zena Bakar (b. Illa De Mozambique, Mozambique; vocals), Gino Abdul Remane (b. Illa De Mozambique, Mozambique; vocals, guitar), Chico Ventura (guitar), Mario Fernandes (bass), Mussa Abdul (percussion) and Belarmino Godeiros (percussion). The name Eyuphuro is the Makau word meaning whirlwind. The sextet, led by songwriters Bakar and Remane, all currently live in Nampula, Mozambique. Their songs cover various aspects of personal relationships set in the context of modern-day life in their home country. Love songs and philosophical lyrics are set against precise, very melodic electric guitar playing and sympathetic, sometimes almost hypnotic, percussion. Mama Mosambiki, the band’s only work easily available in the Western world was recorded in 1990 in Toronto, Canada, in conjunction with the WOMAD organization.
