About Amadodana Ase Wesile
One of South Africa’s most popular gospel groups of all time, Amadodana Ase Wesile influenced a generation of similar a cappella acts in South Africa and neighbouring countries like Eswatini and Lesotho. Consisting solely of members of the Young Men’s Guild (YMG) ministry (which was formed in the early 1900s), Amadodana Ase Wesile was first assembled in 1985 by Thomas Mokhathi, a member from Soweto who recruited men from other Johannesburg townships. Their 1991 debut album, Nkosi Sihlangene, featured songs from the Methodist hymn book and others adapted from bible verses, a direction that defines their extensive discography. Since Amadodana Ase Wesile’s inception, most of the original members have passed on and have been replaced by new voices who are carrying on the group’s mission of spreading the gospel and being exemplary members of the community.
