Thandi Phoenix - EP

Sydney singer Thandi Phoenix grew up surrounded by music. “My mum raised me, and she was obsessed with it,” she tells Apple Music. “And my dad was a radio programmer, so when I spent time with him, he was always blasting music.” After overcoming crippling bouts of stage fright as a teenager, Phoenix started immersing herself in the Sydney music scene, slowly developing her neo-soul and R&B-influenced sound. She hit upon her groove in earnest with 2016’s “Tell Me Where the Lovers Have Gone”, which introduced UK electronic influences into her repertoire. She continues down that path on her self-titled debut EP, as evidenced by the House-inflected “Say It” and “Cleopatra”. Here, Phoenix offers a track-by-track guide. Say It “It’s about being open, honest, transparent, wanting someone to give it to you straight and tell you exactly how they’re feeling about you. [Production team Sigma helped] take my love of ’90s house and bring it into more current sonics.” Cleopatra “The first verse just came out. I was like, I didn’t write this, the spirits came through me! The song is about owning who you are, being a strong queen and not allowing people to take anything away from you because of their own [issues].” Good Shit “It was my birthday, and I had a message on my Facebook from someone that was so tacky and unnecessary. They obviously weren’t wishing me happy birthday, they were reflecting on something in the past and being totally negative and giving me bullshit when I did not need it. I was like, I’m gonna write a song about this.” Again (feat. Dan Caplen) “It was my drummer’s idea [to make this] a duet. I thought about it and was like, ‘That’s a bloody great idea!’ When I heard that Dan was interested in it, I was like, ‘Oh, his voice just cuts!’ It’s so damn good.” Diggin’ “It’s about working through those moments where you doubt yourself, and it’s about pushing through. And also not waiting around for things to happen. Nothing’s gonna happen if you sit around and wait for it.” “Complete” “This is a song saying, ‘Love yourself, learn who you are and continue that self-growth and self-love.’ [If you don’t], you’re not going to grow to be able to accomplish the things you want to. It all starts from within. For me to be the best version of myself, I need to be kind to myself. I need to love myself.”
