Stay Alive

Stay Alive

There’s been a bevy of music recorded and released during 2020’s quarantine, but few releases have sounded as stark and intimate as Stay Alive. Laura Jane Grace’s first-ever solo album is a drastic change from the full-bodied rock music on her 2018 album with backing band the Devouring Mothers, Bought to Rot—and it’s light years away from the snarling anarcho-punk she’s made with the eternally beloved Against Me! Recorded with Steve Albini, the album finds Grace arming herself with little more than am acoustic guitar and a drum machine, evoking The Mountain Goats troubadour John Darnielle as she waxes on isolation (“Shelter in Place”), social justice (“Hanging Tree”) and above all else survival. These bite-sized songs may seem quiet at first, but Grace’s roar is unmistakable and powerful as ever.
