Sold for Sale

Sold for Sale

On Didirri Peters’ debut album, the Melbourne singer-songwriter reckons with his morality and forces the listener to do the same. He sets the tone with opener “Sold for Sale”, contemplating the loss of ego: “There's no time to spend on waiting, ’cause I won't die another death,” he sings. “And this helps me to forget that I'm sold for sale at the buyer's price.” His knack for simplifying complicated emotions and ideas is especially felt on the contemplative ballad “Sold for Sale” and nostalgic pop-rock sing-along “The Critic”. His candid storytelling elevates each track, whether he’s pouring out his anxieties about missing Christmas (“Raw Stuff”) or grappling with the silence of a lonely existence (“Blue Mood Rising”). In between dreamy jangle and reflections on the darker corners of his mind, the 25-year-old singer offers small pockets of light, especially on "Don't fight with what you're fighting for", a reminder that to fix the world, one needs to fix themselves. His musings feel assured and absolute until closer “Strange”, in which he confesses to second-guessing everything: “Doesn’t it seem strange when you say something you didn’t have to say/Like the extra notes you didn't have to play.” Didirri’s diaristic musings may be messy and non-linear, but jolts of self-awareness make Sold for Sale an enjoyable, intimate debut.
