Purple Heart

Purple Heart

Prolific Atlanta-bred trap rapper Money Man leaves no questions as to what sort of sound he prefers. The bass is always heavy, the drums always punchy, the voice always drenched in an intoxicating blend of moroseness and defiance. The former Cash Money MC has been making songs in this vein since he emerged in 2016, and on 2024’s Purple Heart, he proves that consistency pays off and yields reliable results. The album is dripped in casual flexes that are both highly entertaining and believable. On “Cover Up”, which kicks with a hard-hitting bass drum and soaring choral samples, Money Man raps, “Fly to New York on a Tuesday/Just to shop and watch a movie/Hit Miami on a Friday, then we leave that bitch to fly away.” Five days and he’s back home in the ATL, presumably to link up with another MC, like he does with Memphis’ Moneybagg Yo on “Turnt”. Despite the flexing, Money Man occasionally lets his guard down. On “That’s Easy”, he showcases a more sensitive side, crooning over acoustic guitar about all the ways he’ll take care of his lady. “Don't worry about your rent or none of your bills, that shit paid for,” he raps.
