Out In Oslo

C.O.F.F.I.N prove more accessible than ever on their sixth studio album, balancing their raw punk roots with resounding echoes of 1970s Australian pub rock. Out in Oslo is packed with casual fist-pumpers, as gang-style harmonies and Abijah Rado’s lively guitar solos flank drummer/singer Ben Portnoy’s gruff vocals and anthemic refrains. It helps that the band tapped Amyl and The Sniffers guitarist Declan Mehrtens to produce the album, with the vocals co-produced by Frenzal Rhomb’s Jason Whalley. Those collaborators know full well how to tightly braid together melody and mayhem, and these songs strike a similar balance. “Sleep in It” is a compact boogie-rock romp, while “Think Bad” locks into a bluesy strut worthy of AC/DC. On the softer side, “13 Days” is a strummy ballad and “Won’t Let You Down” is a rootsy rocker complete with harmonica and slide guitar. As documented in the 2026 documentary 10,000 Miles from Oslo, C.O.F.F.I.N have been going strong for more than two decades—ever since Rado and Portnoy started the band in Sydney’s Northern Beaches before they were even proper teenagers. Though it may be mellower and mature than their previous outings, this record represents a satisfying distillation of their journey to date.
