Don Burrows recorded this material for use in films in the '60s—you might guess as much from the introductory fanfare and peppy, to-the-point solos of "Titles Theme"—but the saxophonist's finger-snapping cuts work just as well on their own. The slinky "Porgy and Bess Medley" is a sidewinding study in contrasting moods, and "The Wailing Waltz" boasts killer guitar-and-flute interplay. With its tight ensemble playing and perky arrangements, the album sometimes sounds like Australia's own worthy answer to a classic Oliver Nelson date, and the vintage studio sound is a treat throughout.
