She’s among the industry’s most prolific singers so it’s somewhat surprising that Maanmatti is only Nimrat Khaira’s second solo album. The artist’s work spans a variety of genres, but she returns to her roots on her own records. If 2022’s Nimmo was strongly flavoured with bhangra pop, this ballad-heavy offering has her digging deeper into her culture as a whole, singing words by poet/lyricist Harmanjeet Singh on all nine of its tracks. Lilting opener “Dadiyan Naniyan” stirs up an array of emotions, but it’s the rhythm-driven “Akhan” that really takes you on a euphoric journey.
