Hearts That Strain is the Nottingham songwriter's most consistent record to date, thanks to the graceful country lilt of tunes like “This Time,” “Bigger Love,” and “Southern Rain.” When he launches into the uptempo rockabilly ramble of “Burn Alone,” it's no less convincing, especially when Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach enters with a buzzing guitar lead.
