On the Montreal trio Madame's second album, singer Michel Gatignol lambastes late-'80s consumerism over choppy rhythm guitars, splashes of synthesiser and martial drumbeats. Listeners will come for the hooks and stay for Gatignol's bouncy baritone takes on desire, ambition and greed. Jangly guitars and a pulse reminiscent of Devo propel "Propriétaire"; a wordless chorus sweetens the cradle-to-grave phoniness depicted in the title track; and on "Riche" anxious, minor-key guitar riffs make getting "riche, riche, riche" sound about as appealing as a root canal. Mission accomplished.
