Not so much genre-melding as genre-melting, Midnight Juggernauts’ 2007 sleeper-hit debut boils down the best (and weirdest) bits of disco, psych, art pop and dance music. Then the Melbourne mad scientists bathe it all in dreamy vintage synths, falsetto vocals and soaring choruses. “Into the Galaxy” offers a futuristic vision both campy and paranoid, while “Shadows” is a bass-bumping party. Cutting across a full spectrum of moods and references, Dystopia is as likely to summon Beach Boys harmonies as an ominous vocoder growl.
