DICHOTOMY

DICHOTOMY

The Australian dance duo SLUMBERJACK, formed by Morgan Then and Fletcher Ehlers, spent a solid decade on the club and festival circuit before assembling their first album. On the road, they’re known for muscular, melodic tracks that straddle future bass and dubstep. Here, they push themselves a little further, thinking outside more conventional, club-oriented boxes. These billowing, cinematic songs fall all over the emotional spectrum, blending moody, sinister soundscapes (“Poison” featuring Sydnee Carter), lumbering bass drops (“Paradox” featuring The Kite String Triangle) and tender pop vocals (“Not For You” featuring Nicole Millar). The project’s psychedelic closer, “Opia’s Theme”, offers a dramatic finish, with stomping bass whops, minor-key strings and manipulated vocal samples that hush and howl. As high on feeling as it is on intensity, the song feels like 10 years of blissed-out festival experiences all rolled into one.
