Part of Australia’s robust roots scene, singer-songwriter James Van Cooper’s sound belies his age—at 21, he’s an old pro. Van Cooper gained his start leading a hard-rock band at age 15, before he grew tired of the excesses that accompanied that lifestyle and image. Captivated by Americana’s emphasis on honest songwriting, he set out to compose his debut solo album, Coming Home. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Scott Campbell, it didn’t leave behind his rock foundation. Van Cooper bridges his knowledge, past and present, with bluesy country songwriting rounded out by glam-rock vocals reminiscent of Sebastian Bach, David Lee Roth and Axl Rose.
