Sydney sextet Winston Surfshirt have been on a (sweet) roll, releasing the warmly received Sponge Cake in 2017 and a “rebaked” version the following year. The second studio album doesn’t stray far from their game plan, right down to the baked-goods-inspired title. The organic rhythms, horns and keys recall sun-bleached ’70s soul and funk (“Need You”, “For the Record”, “Since I Saw You There”). Meanwhile, the lithe raps (“Show Love”, “Crypto”, “NobodyLikeYou”) and sly synths keep the party in the present. Apple Crumble feels wonderfully retro and genuine, perfect for sunset or sunrise.
