![An Improvisation Through Space and Time - EP](/assets/artwork/1x1.gif)
Mindy Meng Wang is the master of the centuries-old Chinese guzheng, a 21-string plucked zither measuring over a metre and a half in length. Here she explores its full sonic range, with improvisations that showcase both its beautiful traditional sound and its extraordinarily varied sound-world. The Australia-based artist, who’s previously collaborated with Gorillaz and Regurgitator, brings a contemporary mindset to this most ancient of instruments—on the theatrical, humorous “Clown’s New Trick”, she explores the guzheng’s full expressive powers, while “Thoughts in the Rain” features the guzheng’s bell-like harmonics and subtle percussive effects. She uses a bow on “Dimensions of a Strange Land”, conjuring otherworldly drone effects underneath a mesmerising, chant-like melody—an effect that resurfaces on the final poignant track, “Dream of Burden”.
