A Gift & A Kers

A Gift & A Kers

Early in his career, Campbelltown-raised rapper Kerser claimed he would make 10 albums in 10 years then call it quits. Having now reached that milestone in 2023–slightly later than planned, given his debut LP, The Nebulizer, came out in 2011—the artist born Scott Froml seems to be sticking to his promise of hanging up the mic. “Been some time/You’ve really watched me grow/You helped me hit the top/Now will you watch me go?” he raps on the celebratory “Been Some Time”. Perhaps not surprisingly, there’s an element of reflection on A Gift & A Kers—the highly autobiographical “Take You Back” trawls through the highs and lows of the MC’s career, its EDM inflections harking back to the sound of his 2011 debut. There is, of course, plenty of room for braggadocio in songs including “Seen It All” (“I ain’t nothin’ like you seen before/You seen Kers, then you pretty much seen it all”). The self-made rapper is keen to remind everyone that, despite an absence of mainstream radio play or media attention, he’s done what he set out to do, as reflected in the triumphant refrain of “Ask About Me”: “Fuckin’ oath I’m proud of me, ’cause I did what I said I would.”
