As we left the so-called ‘bubble gum’ era behind, we started a journey, together with others like Mdu, Mandoza, TKzee, Trompies, Arthur among others, birthing a new sound: kwaito. Tapping into music from the previous era as well as Chicago house, it brought new stars like Boom Shaka with their monster hit, ‘Thobela’. Over the years the music continued to evolve, bringing diverse talents like Brown Dash, Bongo Maffin, and Mafikizolo. Mandoza’s ‘Nkalakatha’ was a significant crossover hit. The emergence of house influence brought in by the likes of Brothers of Peace, Heavy K, and others is included as an important era.
