Muhal Richard Abrams Essentials

Debuting in 1968, pianist/composer Muhal Richard Abrams channelled the full spectrum of the African American musical experience in his half-century of writing and performing. Songs like “Blu Blu Blu” combine gutbucket blues with a jazzy, big-band swing, while “Balu” sees him working a 10-piece band into a contemplative, raucous flow of ideas. Abstract electronics wiggle through the Afrofuturistic free jazz of “Oqa”, and “The Infinitive Flow” reveals an elegant side to Abrams' solo-piano work, coursing along with a meditative, cascading stride.
