About MFSB
As backing musicians for the likes of the O'Jays, the Spinners, and the Stylistics, among others, and the house band for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International label, the instrumental outfit MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) were a crucial element in the creation of the Philly Soul sound of the 1970s. Marked by mellow yet funky grooves and lush orchestration, MFSB's music was an early template for disco (especially the track "Love is the Message"), and their song "T.S.O.P." became the theme for the long-running TV show SOUL TRAIN. Disagreements with Gamble & Huff led to the demise of the outfit, although many members would go on to play in the Salsoul Orchestra, the house band for Salsoul Records.
