Jacques Duphly

About Jacques Duphly

An organist and harpischordist who maintained the organist post at St Eloi and Notre Dame de la Ronde. He was able to hold the two positions with the help of his sister, Marie-Anne-Agathe, who substituted upon his absence. Although he may not have been a brilliant organist, Duphly excepted his positions at Eloi and Ronde for pursuit of the harpsichord in Paris. Greater success was available to him there and it followed from his playing and teaching abilities. Rameau's music served as Duphly's teacher of the instrument. Noted contemporaries of Duphly included A.-L. Couperin, Balbastre and LeGrande; he was considered to be among their equals when it came to teaching. Unfortunately many of his methods and ideas printed and credited in Rousseau's "Dictionnarie" were plagiarised from Rameau. On the whole he lived a quiet life so much so that during the last 20 years of his life hardly any one knew where he was or what he was about. He had not composed much music since 1767 and the works which survive are contained in a four volume set. The collections are closely related to other composers of the time and demonstrate few unique characteristics. ~ Keith Johnson
